World renowned chansonnier Charles Aznavour visited the hilltop Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan in the morning. Instead of taking his place in the area designated for guests, Charles Aznavour approached the tent intended for media representatives. The singer’s unexpected move caused a stir among journalists. Without answering any question, Mr Aznavour passed through the crowd of cameramen and took a seat among guests. People in Armenia and around the world today are commemorating the victims of the Ottoman-era massacres on the 100th anniversary of the first genocide of the 20th century. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the Memorial during the day to pay their respects to the 1.5 million Armenians slaughtered by Ottoman Turks in the 1915-1923 Genocide.
