Vardan Petrosyan Case: Trial recessed immediately after beginning (video)
Hardly had the court hearing in the high-profile case involving famous actor Vardan Petrosyan begun at the Court of Appeal when it was recessed because the aggrieved party's lawyer, member of Armenia's Chamber of Advocates Ruben Baloyan had not arrived yet. Earlier this month, Baloyan filed an appeal to the higher court demanding a tougher punishment for Vardan Petrosyan. In January, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kotayk region sentenced the actor to five years in prison. Baloyan demands that Petrosyan be sentenced to 6.5 years. Vardan Petrosyan was taken to jail in connection with the deadly road accident in October 2013 in which his BMW collided with another vehicle, Niva, on the Yeghvard-Yerevan highway. Two passengers of the Niva were killed in the crash. Petrosyan himself was among the injured people who were hospitalized that night. Petrosyan later declared that he would not run away from justice and was ready to bear responsibility if found guilty as charged.
