For already 10 years St. Sargis Day has been turned into a big feast, said Ararat Patriarchal Diocese “Tsiranavor” youth union head Hasmik Mirzoyan. “As St. Sargis is not only a Saint but also a military leader, we will start our celebrations from the military units. St. Sargis is not only the patron saint of the young, but also all the people,”- said Hasmik Mirzoyan. The feast of St. Sargis has deeper roots. As “Calendar” National Theatre Artistic Director Hasmik Baghramyan notes, this feast has pre-Christian roots and non-Christian nations also had the cult of St. Sargis. “The feast was connected with the powerful force to take winter storm and frost away. The cult of St. Sargis is connected more with healing. He was a patron as all other medicine men, but the fact that he was a patron saint of all lovers is new,”- said Hasmik Baghramyan. The Armenian Apostolic Church doesn’t admit that he was a medicine man, he is a Saint. Hasmik Mirzoyan says that she doesn’t remember storm on this day. The symbols of St. Sargis Feast- salted cake, flour also come from pre-Christian period. “These traditions have remained among the people,”- said Hasmik Baghramyan. The Church hasn’t refused and destroyed national traditions, it just urges to pray to Saint and believe.
