Salaries in Armenia will be increased in 2015 but not by the standards of the current inflation. “Inflation in the country has already exceeded 5 percent, and it is unlikely to be reduced,” says Gagik Minasyan, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Financial-Credit, Budgetary and Economic Affairs. However, Mr Minasyan says there is no need to hurry with conclusions. “When the situation is stabilized we shall return to the topic.” Mikael Melkumyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), feels that the country is going in the wrong direction. No investments have been made in Armenia in the last 2-3 years. “The same scenario was observed in Georgia during the war with Russia when one could not find fuel at filling stations for 5-6 days,” he said. The lawmaker says authorities in Armenia failed to respond adequately to the currency fluctuations in the market. “Instead of removing part of the Armenian currency out of the circulation, they turned the U.S. dollar into a product which was purchased and stored by citizens.” Mr Melkumyan says the banks did not have another option: there was a dollar shortage in the market and they decided not to sell the existing currency. “There was not a single state agency that could cope with the problem and somehow relieve the tension.” The BHK lawmaker says his party does not want to use the tense situation and carry out a revolution.
