The situation is changing every hour, every day, with the Central Bank and government discussing mechanisms for curbing the weakening of the Armenian dram and stabilizing the situation, Minister of Finance Gagik Khachatryan said during the parliamentary briefings on December 17. Asked whether the situation is getting out of control given the fact that shops are closing and the price surge is becoming uncontrollable, Mr Khachatryan said, “Of course, there can be cases when economic entities may find themselves in unpredictable situations. The Central Bank and the government should be able to find mechanisms to stabilize the situation again. The minister did not rule out that currency speculation can be one of the factors leading to the depreciation of the Armenian currency. “Yes, there are objective and subjective reasons and we must close the loopholes in order to be able to reach a solution.”
