The Institute for War and Peace Reporting and Media Center hosts on Wednesday roundtable discussion entitled “Amendments to the Accumulative Pension Law and their Repercussions on the Academic Sphere.” The discussion starts at 1.00 at the IWPR office, 30 Saryan Street. The guests at the studio woill be Artsvik Minasyan, a member of Parliament from the ARF Dashnaktsutyun party, Grigor Petrosyan, a former research associate at the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Gevorg Giorgisyan, an activist of Dem.am (I am agianst) civic initiative, and Vahagn Dallakyan, a lecturer at the Yerevan State University's Department of Law, who will present their opinion on the situation. The discussion event will be hosted by Lilit Arakelyan, a reporter for Araratnews.am. Experts and public figures say the reforms to the Accumulative Pension Law have incurred displeasure among young lecturers and scientists and are likely to have adverse effects on education and science sectors of the country. As a result of the transitional provisions of the law, some 120 specialists out of 470 young lecturers and scientists have already left their jobs, while 350 are awaiting the settlement of the problem. Lilit Arakelyan, an IWPR contributor in Armenia, is currently working on an article aimed at shedding light on the issue. The story will appear on the IWPR website (www.iwpr.net) this week. This discussion event is organized within the framework of IWPR’s programme Strengthening Capacities, Bridging Divides — Reducing Tensions across the South Caucasus, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event is organized in cooperation with Public Journalism Club’s Media Center project.
