Until the end of 1980s’, 60 percent of population in Syunik region Lehvaz community were Turks and Azerbaijanis, then the resettlement started. There are 720 residents living in Lehvaz. According to the words of community head Sasun Zakaryan, it is the only community of Armenia, where the population is increasing year after year. There are 96 pupils at the community school and 68 children in the kindergarten. They have both drinking water and irrigation water. “Much work has been done but there is still much to do,”- says community head. Because of the rain on July the road taking to Lehvaz was destroyed and until today there has been no support to repair it. “There is also a problem of buying houses in the community,”- says Sasun Zakaryan. According to the decision of the Government, banks don’t provide loans to these villagers. “In fact, people want to live in the village, but the state doesn’t let it,”- the community head sincerely states that he bought the most expensive house of the community for his son with 14 thousands dollars, and the prices of other houses are a bite less. Another problem is gasification, though gas pipes are close to the village. The issue of employment is partially solved in Lehvaz. Many people work in Meghri, Russian bank is close and young people from 25 families work there with high salaries, another part serves in our Armed Forces with the contract. There are also villagers working in Agarak factory. Community head is displeased that if the villagers open a small shop or trade some food near the school, tax officers come and demand money. He says that Agarak Copper and Molybdenum Combine is close to their community, they breathe that air but the combine doesn’t help them in any way. Zakaryan notes that the state is going to join some communities but he is sure that it will be the end for many villages. He reminds that there are small villages, where there are few residents and it is because they have a village head. If there is no village head, those villages will be completely emptied. Community head regrets to say that the capital is under attention, but villages are neglected. Lehvaz budget is 13 millions AMD. “It is normal compared with other communities, but it isn’t sufficient for solving many problems,”- sums up Sasun Zaqaryan.
