Which of the two structures should Armenia join – the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) or the European Union? We need to hold a referendum to know public opinion, says Vahram Martirosyan, a member of the European Choice NGO. “Referendum is a mechanism of public responsibility as everyone in Armenia, including cabmen, lecturers, teachers, complain of the acting authorities. Everyone complains of one person but they believe that things will better without their immediate participation,” he says. Vahram Martirosyan says for 3,5 years we negotiated to join the European Union and then, all of a sudden, we were forced to sign another document. “It turns out that the authorities presented Armenia as a milksop that could change his decision overnight. If the political parties show honour to Armenia, let them join efforts and hold a referendum,” he said. Boris Navasardyan, another member of the European Choice NGO and, Chairman of the Yerevan Press Club, reminded that the EEU is not an established structure and the timing is not realistic either. He compares Armenian authorities with Soviet-era statesman Anastas Mikoyan and recalls a well-known joke when Nikoyan walked through Red Square on a rainy day without an umbrella and without getting wet. “We can no longer influence their decision as Armenia has given its consent to the EEU membership. If on October 10, the three members of the Union – Russian, Belarus and Kazakhstan – also say ‘yes,’ everything will end there, although nothing is irreversible,”said Mr Navasardyan.
