At present, Armenia is not ready to export cheese to the Russian market, the chairman of the Union of Cheese Producers said on Friday. “Unfortunately, we were not ready yet to export cheese to Russia because we annually export 1,500 tons of cheese. And now we want to export 8000 tons of cheese which we do not afford at present. If we want to enter the Russian market we shall have a domestic deficit,” said Armen Gigoyan. Cheese production is relatively low in Armenia which is conditioned by the shortage of milk. “You cannot predict how much milk you will have that season. In order to solve the problem, we need to attract the attention of legislative and executive bodies, as well as non-governmental organizations. We need to monitor and regulate milk production,” he said. Armen Gigoyan also added that in recent years people have been buying high -quality cheese. The most popular varieties of cheese among consumers are Lori and Chanakh.
