Protest action held in NY in support of jailed Armenian businessman

Another protest action was held outside the Russian Consulate in New York in support of the jailed Armenian businessman and philanthropist Levon Hayrapetyan. The participants were already aware of the disgraceful decision of Moscow's Basman District Court which ruled on September 12 to keep the 65-year-old Armenian benefactor in custody until December 15. The protesters expressed their anger over the gross violation of human rights and asked the Russian consul to convey their concerns and resentment to the Russian authorities who continue to keep the Armenian philanthropist diagnosed with cancer in detention. Levon Hayrapetyan’s daughter, Elena Hayrapetyan, and other family members were participating in the protest action organized by “Freedom for Levon Hayrapetyan” movement. The next rally will be organized on the eve of the UN summit to be held in New York in September. Sara Gasparyan, NY Levon Hayrapetyan was detained on July 15. A few days later, a court in Moscow issued an arrest warrant for him and chose a two-month arrest as a measure of restraint. Later, the 65-year-old businessman was officially charged with embezzlement and illegal money laundering by a Russian investigative body.
