In the given geopolitical situation, one of the possible scenarios for the Karabakh conflict settlement is that it might remain part of the Russian sphere of influence for 2-3 years, if a nuclear war is not waged, says a member of the Karabakh Committee. Ashot Manucharyan says the rules of games in similar regional issues are dictated by Russia as according to popular belief the United States or Europe are not interested in the conflict as much as Russia: the latter wants to deploy its troops in Karabakh and close the corridor of communication. “It is evident that Russia can have such a desire, that is it wants to close the South Caucasian corridor, creating a big problem for Europe in view of energy supplies,” said Mr Manucharyan.  At the same time, he stresses that the US may also have such an intention as today the US has a great influence on Europe and may want the latter to depend on Russia on energy issues. The Karabakh Committee member says neither the OSCE Minsk Group nor other structure of the kind have any connection with the Karabakh peace deal. The format is used to maintain equilibrium in the region and make the sides honour the agreements. “The Karabakh conflict will be used as a lever during the Russia-US confrontation,” he said.
