A senior lawmaker of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) says the former governor of Syunik province, who was fired following last year’s shootout outside his house in Goris, is a normal person. HHK lawmaker Vardan Ayvazyan does not believe that former governor Surik Khachatryan might create fear among locals. “What are you speaking about? There cannot be an atmosphere of fear in Syunik. I do not think that a person’s appearance or his manners can cause fear,” said Mr Ayvazyan. He says Surik Khachatryan used to fight agaisnt enemies until the end. “Do you mean to say that you do not mind if Surik Khachatryan is reappointed Governor of Syunik?” In reply to A1+’s question, the HHK lawmaker said, “Let the problems existing in Syunik be solved by a person who is capable to solve them.” On June 1, 2013, Surik Khachatryan’s son Tigran Khachatryan, and one of his bodyguards, Zarzand Nikoghosyan, clashed with Avetik Budaghyan, a 43-year-old local businessman, and his brother Artak for still unclear reasons. Avetik was shot dead while Artak, an Armenian army colonel, was seriously wounded in the incident that led to Surik Khachatryan’s sacking by the Armenian government.
