Nagorno-Karabakh cannot hinder Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said on September 8 during a joint press conference with his Austrian counterpart Sebastian Kurz. The Armenian FM stressed that the negotiation process with the Eurasian Economic Union continues. “The results will be known soon. We have not declared that we are going to join the EEU with Nagorno-Karabakh, therefore Karabakh cannot hamper the process,” said Mr Nalbandian. Speaking about his official visit, Sebastian Kurz singled out three objectives. “I think the political situation is very tense here which requires some mobility from the European Union. I hope the EU will give support to Armenia, enabling the latter to continue its partnership with Russia, at the same time working and expanding cooperation with the EU,” he said. After the press conference, Austrian reporters claimed that their foreign minister had said in his speech that “an interesting political situation exists in the region,” instead of “a tense political situation.” They were sure that the words of the Austrian FM were translated in the wrong way. During the joint press conference, Mr Kurz also said his country is going to open an Austrian Development Agency in Armenia to deepen economic ties between the two countries. “For us, it's a good opportunity to promote cooperation between our two countries,” the Austrian FM said.
