Vice-Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, Head of the Armenia-Latvia Friendship Group Eduard Sharmazanov met with Latvian Ambassador to Armenia Elita Gavele. Armenia’s Honorary Consul in Latvia Armen Ghasaboghlyan also participated in the meeting. Welcoming the guest, the Armenian parliament official emphasized Latvia’s upcoming EU chairmanship and expressed hope that it would give new impetus to Armenia-EU political relations and Armenia-Latvia cooperation. He said Armenia attaches great importance to the continuity of dialogue with the EU. Speaking about regional security issues, Mr. Sharmazanov stressed the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict in the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group, noting that Azerbaijan is carrying out a destructive and destabilizing policy. Ambassador Gavele noted, in turn, that Latvia and European structures are for an exclusively peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. With regard to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey in 1915, Eduard Sharmazanov said that unless the international community recognizes the Armenian Genocide and assesses it as a heinous crime against humanity, the possibility of new genocides cannot be excluded. The interlocutors also discussed issues related to further development of Armenia-Latvia relations and deepening of inter-parliamentary ties.
