Elderly people in Gyumri prefer temporary shelters to nursing homes (video)

Many elderly people living in the ‘domik’ district in Gyumri seem to prefer leading an isolated and helpless life to nursing homes. This still remains unclear say representatives of Shirak Centre NGO. Domiks - wagon-like temporary tin houses – have been standing in the city since the devastating earthquake of 1988. “It is essential that the elderly people who live alone in damp and cold domiks be transferred to nursing homes and we expect the support of social services,” said the NGO. This time Shirak Centre has visited an 80-year-old woman who lives in miserable conditions in a rundown domik.
