The Republican Party and the state are identified in Armenia, says Armen Rustamyan, a representative of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation – Dashnaktsutyun. However, the primary goal of the opposition quartet is not the conduct of early parliamentary elections in the country. “At this point, you should do whatever you are able to do,” he said. The Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) agrees that the political arena is monopolized, but they are not going to overthrow the authorities and come to power at any cost. “If the change of power is to be carried out at the expense of our people, I do not want it,” said BHK lawmaker Mikael Melkumyan. Head of the Republican faction Vahram Baghdasaryan says there is no need for early elections. “We have endorsed numerous proposals submitted by the BHK and Dashnaksutyun. Now we tell them – let us cooperate and change things, but they do not want changes.” Mr Baghdasaryan was angered that the opposition did not participate in the vote of the government program. “If they want to come to power, they should do it in a civilized way instead of boycotting votes and straining the situation.” Addressing the Republican congress on Saturday, Serzh Sargsyan said, “The Republican Party is the largest and densest social structure of our country which is represented in all populated areas and is present in all population groups, even in smallest ones. The peasant of Tavush’s Gosh village Artsrun Hovsepyan should not worry about who to apply and how to do it in order to have the issue of his house damaged from a landslide addressed, but should look for a republican living in his amidst being confident that the latter will help him to put his various concerns on the current policy agenda… No force can accomplish more in Armenia than we, the Republicans…” Artsvik Minasyan, another Dashnak lawmaker, does not understand the claim that the Republicans are the best in Armenia. Moreover, he says, the party’s monopoly has crippled the Constitution. “Everything is decided at Melik Adamyan street (where the office of the ruling Republican Party is located). Republicans challenge other forces and it is high time they showed that they are much better than Republicans.”
