Breast cancer is becoming more common among younger women, say doctors. “Women above 35 should undergo a mammogram and have a Pap test at least once a year,” says Khachanush Hakobyan, Director of the Armenian-American Health Centre. She regrets to say that in most cases women turn to a doctor at the last phase when the illness is less likely to be treated. “The reason that women do not see a doctor is not the lack of finances but their fear. They are afraid that screening mammograms can also find microcalcifications or tumors. But I want to tell everyone that in the 21st century cancer cannot be ‘a verdict,’ especially when it is in its embryonic stage and is not dangerous," she said. Khachanush Hakobyan says mammogram is available to everyone in Armenia, only people need to be more careful with their health. “The Centre is equipped with apparatuses that are very expensive and work very effectively. Besides, our doctors undergo training in the US and are considered to be good specialists in the sphere,” he continued. Khachanush Hakobyan added that there has been an increase in the number of young women who are visiting the Centre for examination.
