Nine young supporters of the Pre-parliament civil initiative were taken to a police department overnight. The group was detained while spreading information about the Initiative’s rally to be held at Liberty Square in Yerevan at 6:30 p.m. May 16. After staying at the police station for several hours, the group was released. The police said the young men had violated Article 172.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Armenia, i.e. violated the restrictions on the use of streets, pavements, squares, parks, stadiums and other public spots. The civil initiative states that the restriction of the groups’ actions conflicts with Article 83.5 of the Constitution which envisages that the rights and freedoms of individuals can only be restricted by RA laws.
