“ANIMAL FARM” IN YEREVAN

Culture

”All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others”. This well-known expression is from ”Animal Farm” by George Orwell. It’s not probably strange that the political figures portray animals here.

However, there’s no need to introduce “Animal Farm” to the Armenian audience, especially the older generation - they will at once recognise both the farm and the animals.

The younger generation itself understood today what “Animal Farm” is in nowadays’ life and maybe compared it with the fairy story of the famous English writer. Today known English actor Gai Masterson brilliantly performed it at the stage of Puppet Theatre after Hovhannes Tumanyan in Yerevan.

Using a bottle of hay, a wood box, and sound and lighting effects, Masterson represented own version for George Orwells’ novel in a simple and true way.

The artist who is in Yerevan for 2 days within ArmFest answered the questions of journalists before performing. ”Though I arrived in Yerevan at night, I noticed it to be a rather nice town with white streets”, he says.

Gai Masterson considered his participation in ArmFest theatre festival as honour, informing that for the first time he performed “Animal Farm” of George Orwell in “Traverse” Theatre of Edinburgh in 1995. In 1997 Gai Masterson appeared with “Animal Farm” in London’s West End.
