Hartavan community is emptying (video)
“If the village stands, it can break a trunk.” The Armenian proverb is no longer relevant in the community of Hartavan in Aragatsotn region which is almost deserted. Today Hartavan has turned into a ‘female’ village as most of the men work abroad. Fifty families have left the village in the last two days. In addition to unemployment, villagers are facing problems with irrigation water, machinery and diesel fuel. They are tired and disappointed. Authorities listen to their problems and concerns during elections and forget their promises soon afterwards. The head of the community does not refute the fact that the main problem is migration; however, he is optimistic and says one day his villagers will return to their homes.
