MONUMENTS PROTECTION BILL UNDER DISCUSSION

Culture

Nowadays, Armenia is thought to have some 33,000 monuments, however, it is a two-decade-old figure, said Gagik Gyurjan, the head of the Monument Protection Service, speaking on Tuesday at the Parliament session.

Gyurjane introduced lawmakers a draft law on protection of the state-owned historical and cultural monuments.

The country has undergone various administrative and territorial changes for two decades, some monuments has been destroyed in natural disasters while new ones erected, Gyurjan said.

New assessment is needed, which will take no less than 2 years, he added. MPs expressed their discontent with such a long term saying the monuments had to be listed and submitted together with the bill.

Legislators are to vote the bill as soon as possible, National Assembly Speaker Armen Khachatryan said.
