EUROPEAN COMMISSION ALLOCATES 4,5 MILLION EURO TO ARMENIA UNDER FOOD SECURITY PROGRAMME

On 26 of June European Commission released a tranche under the Food Security Programme in Armenia in the amount of Euro 4.5 million. This is the second instalment of the grant funds entitled by Armenia under the FSP for the fiscal year 2001.

These funds are used to finance eligible expenditures envisaged in the State Budget Law for the Ministry of Agriculture, National Statistical Service, Cadastre Committee and Ministry of Social Security. In particular, the areas of assistance of the European Commission in the above sectors include plant protection, seed breeding, pedigree breeding, veterinary services (including procurement of vaccines), mapping and free distribution of land titles to farmers, global cadastral network, maintenance of state orphanages and family benefits, as well as household surveys, food security information systems and compilation of national food balance, etc.

In addition, the disbursement of the Euro 4.5 million tranche lays grounds for signing the Memorandum of Understanding for the fiscal year 2002. (Memorandum of Understanding is the fundamental agreement between the Government of Armenia and European Commission to manage the Food Security Programme). The latter provides for 9.5 million in two tranches, Euro 5.0 million and Euro 4.5 million respectively, to finance the on-going programs and measures in the aforementioned sectors in accordance with the agreements between the Government and European Commission.
